About STA / Respite

What is STA / Respite?

NDIS respite, funded through Short Term Accommodation (STA), pays for a supported stay away from home for up to 14 days at a time. It covers your accommodation, meals, personal care, and activities in one bundled NDIS support so you and your regular carers can take a genuine break.

At Bridging Abilities, our NDIS respite on the Central Coast is designed around each participant. Whether you're booking a planned weekend, a longer school-holiday stay, an emergency respite placement, or a trial run before moving into SIL, our team tailors the stay to your goals, routines, and support needs.

You'll be supported 24/7 by trained disability support workers in a comfortable, accessible home. We help with personal care, medication, meals, and getting out into the Central Coast community, so respite feels restorative — not just a stopover.

Common Questions

STA / Respite FAQs

What is NDIS respite?

NDIS respite is a short, supported stay away from home funded under Short Term Accommodation (STA). It gives the participant a change of environment and gives family, informal carers, or usual support workers a planned break. STA funding covers accommodation, meals, personal care, and activities for up to 14 days at a time.

How do I use my NDIS funding for respite?

Respite is claimed from your Short Term Accommodation (STA) budget in Core Supports. If STA is in your plan, we can help you book a stay, confirm the level of support you need, and invoice the NDIS or your plan manager directly. If STA isn't in your plan yet, ask about it at your next plan review — Bridging Abilities can provide supporting information.

What's the difference between STA and respite?

They're the same funding under the NDIS. 'Short Term Accommodation (STA)' is the official NDIS line item; 'respite' is what most families call it. Whichever term you use, it pays for a supported stay away from home so participants and carers can have a break.

How long can I stay in NDIS respite?

STA respite is funded for up to 14 days at a time and up to 28 days per year, though this varies with each participant's plan. Stays can be a single night, a weekend, or a longer break — we build the schedule around your goals and your carer's needs.

Do you offer emergency respite on the Central Coast?

Yes. Bridging Abilities can arrange emergency and unplanned NDIS respite across the Central Coast when a carer becomes unwell, a situation changes suddenly, or a participant needs a safe place to stay. Call us to check current availability.
